How to Choose the Right Screen Printing Squeegee Rubber Hardness
Durometer is a measure of squeegee rubber hardness, which determines the pressure needed to push ink through the screen mesh. The higher the durometer, the less the rubber blade bends; the lower the durometer, the more flexible the blade is.
- 50–60 durometer: Ideal when you need a larger ink volume. Softer than other options, these squeegees deposit more ink, which boosts opacity and coverage. They’re perfect for printing white ink on black T-shirts or any high-opacity color on dark garments.
- 60 durometer: The softest type, suited for delicate printing work. Its high flexibility pairs well with thin inks, and it also excels at high-density printing by letting plenty of ink pass through the stencil.
- 70/75 durometer: Medium-hard and the most widely used. A 70 durometer squeegee works for nearly all screen printing applications and is a great starting choice for beginners.
- 80 durometer: Very stiff, making it a top pick for intricate print jobs. It works well with thick inks like white and other opaque plastisol inks.
